What Size Eggs Should I Buy? Which is REALLY the Cheapest?

December 1, 2015 by jlpenner 7 Comments

I was curious about this.  Are large eggs always the best value?  I know I always grab for them and I’m sure many of you do, too.

Did you know that the difference between sizes is 3 oz.? Not much.. A dozen medium eggs are 21 oz., large- 24oz., extra large- 27oz., and jumbo- 30oz.

My local $.99 Only Store sells medium eggs for $.99 and I have passed them up in the past, because they are medium. I have come to realize that is really silly- because the cheapest I can get large ones most of the time is around $1.75. Knowing that their is only a 3 oz. difference put in perspective that the $.99 price is a real bargain- saving me $.30 a dozen (4.7 cents per oz. vs. 7.2 cents).

The only problem with buying a size different than large is baking with them, since all recipes are based on large eggs. But I found some conversion information at Egg Solutions and Incredible Egg that you will find helpful:

:: 5 medium eggs = 4 large eggs = 4 extra large eggs
:: 6 medium eggs = 5 large eggs = 4 extra large eggs
:: 7 medium eggs = 6 large eggs = 5 extra large eggs

or

:: 1 medium egg = 3 tablespoons
:: 1 large egg = 3¼ tablespoons

Hope that helps!!

    Wow! I don't think I've ever ventured away from large eggs, just by default. I've never even looked at the prices of the other sizes. Tunnel vision, apparently. Thanks for the tip!

    Since in my Metro Detroit area extra large and jumbo eggs are usually on sale often at 99¢ for both those sizes or 4/$5 for the jumbo, I only end up buying large eggs when the other two are not on sale. The reason I don't like medium eggs is if you are making deviled eggs, there is never going to be enough filling using medium eggs. I haven't had any bad baking experience with larger eggs and never bother to convert.

    Thank you!! I have always bought large eggs because, well, they were large eggs. My husband just asked me last week (while shopping) why not medium eggs? And I said because we want large, he said why? and I didn't have an answer for him. Now you've solved a great mystery for me (I knew that recipes were based on large eggs but I never took the time to research the difference). I love your site and you're always amazing me with helpful info that I need and use. Thank you again!

    awesome, thanks for posting this! I've stood in the egg section before, perplexed, wondering how I knew I was getting the best deal.... what the difference was between egg sizes... etc! GOOD TO KNOW NOW ! :)
