Went Off the Deep End- Made My Own Deodorant!!

December 1, 2013 by jlpenner 7 Comments

Yes, I went ultra frugal and made my own deodorant- crazy right, I mean, can’t I just use some coupons and get it free or almost free. Yes, I could, but..I have been advised by my doctor to use an aluminum free deodorant for health reasons.

And the expensive “natural” alternatives to regular deodorant are just not cutting it. And to be honest I was never that exited about the effectiveness of the regular stuff anyway.

So, a few months ago when I saw Kitchen Stewardship’s post on her homemade deodorant I was intrigued, not really for the frugalness of it, but because I wanted it to work.

I took the plunge a few days ago and mixed up her recipe of virgin coconut oil (since I recently bought a gallon of the stuff), corn starch and baking soda, and you know what?… It’s awesome. Not only is it cheap but it actually works. Not just pretty good- but really good. It has a nice coconut scent, keeps me dry and smelling nice all day. Granted, it is winter and I don’t know how it will hold up in the summer but I wasn’t pleased with my results of the other deodorants in the winter or summer.

I did not price it out- but I can’t imagine a tube costing more than $0.50- and maybe less. But again, that is not really what I care about.. I mostly care that I smell great 🙂

Try it friends, you just might like it, too.

So tell us more about what type of container/applicator you put it in? What's the consistency like? So glad it works for you!

Heather- You just stuff it into an old deodorant stick, that way you use it just like regular deo. As for the feel of it, it is mostly the same, maybe a bit less smooth.

Katie- Thanks, but I will not go as far as eating liver- lol.

one of my younger brothers (in his 40s) is making his own laundry soap, deo and cologne. He's been sharing hints at health food stores.

I haven't tried it yet,(I am on a no spend time) but i read where you use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and that will do the same for deodorant.(I know it is less than $2 to try....but I am on no spend this month)
I plan on trying it(my schedule is that I work 3 days and am off 4 days so I could try it on the 4 days)Next month. LOL
