Today’s Frugal Tip: What to Do with a Grainy Watermelon

August 28, 2011 by jlpenner Leave a Comment

You can picture it- you buy a yummy looking watermelon, it’s hot outside and you can not wait to crack open that baby and eat a huge slice.  The you cut it open and it’s kind of puffy and grainy inside.. yuck.

So what are you going to do with it? Do what I did tonight, juice it.

I cut it up (it was huge) and threw the pieces into my blender,  zipped it for a minute and there you go, watermelon juice.  I filled 8 Popsicle molds and 2 ice cube trays (for a watermelon smoothie or maybe sorbet) and froze those.  Then I strained the rest for juice.  Now the girls have watermelon juice in their lunch tomorrow- what a yummy treat.

Note: if you want it a little sweeter you could add a bit of sugar- but I think it tastes great as is.

If you have a frugal tip email it to FFD. We would love to share it.
