Did you know that using Healthy Dog Treats like Nudges can help you train your dog. And a trained dog is generally a safer dog.
One sad fact is that there is a 30% increase in lost pets between the dates of July 4-6? Any guesses why? It’s pretty easy to see that all the loud noises on the 4th of July could scare a lot of pets. And if they are not secured properly they are likely to jump fences.
I think the saddest statistic of all is that on average only 14% of lost pets are returned to their owners. I think that is what happened to my little Flynn. You see we rescued him from the Humane Society and he was a stray. Poor little guy, he is such a sweetie pie and I love him to death (he is basically my son..lol). But like many shelter dogs he is most definitely a nervous dog. He has separation anxiety when away from me, he can’t stand not to be with me. This not abnormal for dogs, as they are pack animals and they want to be with their “pack”. But none the less this trait is not great for everyday life. He also is scared by loud sounds and it would never be a good idea to take him out on the 4th of July, he needs to be tucked safely in our house.
My mom and I headed over to Walmart to pick up a bag of Nudges for my Flynny and had a great time (you can see the whole shop on Google+ right here). We snagged the Nudges and a bunch of fun stuff for July 4th!

One of the things that I have found helps him a lot when he gets nervous, for one reason or another, is to have him go lay on his pillow (that is right next to my side of the bed). It doesn’t matter if I am there or not, that spot is secure for him, so he is happy to go there. I just need to say “pillow” and he will head to his spot. Then I can re-enforce the behavior with healthy dog treats like Nudges and that makes him even happier.
This same technique can be used on July 4th to help you pet feel safer. Let them hang out in a safe spot (like their bed) and reward them with Nudges chicken jerky for dogs for staying calm.
Nudges are also a great healthy treat that I feel good rewarding Flynn for learning new tricks.. like fetching the ball. He’s a great “fetcher”, but doesn’t want to give it up so much. Give him a little piece of Nudges and he is more excited about that than his ball, silly guy! Nudges are not only made in the USA, they tear easily for all size dogs and so you can make them last while you are training. They are high quality, safe, no fillers, have no artificial flavors, and even smell good (like bbq beef jerky).
My Flynn, he is a wonderful family dog who is very tolerant of my girls shenanigans. And if he gets tired of them he just runs to Mommy!
