May 31, 2011 by jlpenner 2 Comments

  I am on vacation this week and thought it might be fun to revisit some “vintage” posts. This was originally posted in Janurary 2009. There are lots of things I enjoy about being more frugal- but I think I am wired that way. I am able to get pleasure out of not spending money… most of the time. But somethings are just really hard to give up, for example, I love fashion- not necessarily $200 shoes fashion (although that {Read More}

Does Living Frugally Make You Happier? – Part 4

May 30, 2011 by jlpenner Leave a Comment

I am on vacation this week and thought it might be fun to revisit some “vintage” posts. This was originally posted in February 2009. This is the final chapter (part 1 , part 2 and part 3) in our discussion with Danny Kofke, author of How to Survive (and Perhaps Thrive) on a Teacher’s salary. I concluded my discussion with Danny by asking him follow-up questions about happiness and how living frugally impacts that attitude. When you have done the {Read More}

Does Living Frugally Make You Happier? – Part 3

May 29, 2011 by jlpenner Leave a Comment

I am on vacation this week and thought it might be fun to revisit some “vintage” posts.  This was originally posted in February 2009. This is the third chapter (part 1 and part 2) in our discussion with Danny Kofke, author of How to Survive (and Perhaps Thrive) on a Teacher’s salary. May 26, 2011 by jlpenner Leave a Comment

I am on vacation this week and thought it might be fun to revisit some “vintage” posts.  This was originally posted in September 2009. I have never been thrilled with microwave popcorn- at least the taste that is. It’s not really that expensive- I can usually get it for around $1 a box making it a pretty cheap treat at .33. But it never tastes right to me- it always seems “chemically”. So I recently bought a bag of popcorn kernels {Read More}

How we got free HD TV (and it’s legal!!!)

May 25, 2011 by jlpenner 3 Comments

I am on vacation this week and thought it might be fun to revisit some “vintage” posts.  This was originally posted in July 2010. We’ve been forced to re-examine our budget and make additional cuts to make ends meet. A few years ago, we downgraded from the cable package that has all the basic cable channels to the “limited” cable package. (I still miss the Food Network!) Even though we had only the limited package, we were still paying a {Read More}

Making Home Affordable – Our Journey

December 11, 2009 by jlpenner Leave a Comment

This year has been a pretty big struggle for our family (actually the last 2-3 have). My husband and I were (I still am) self employed and the recession took a hard hit on our businesses even before people were complaining that we were in a recession. We just happening to be in what one might consider semi- luxury industries. He was photographing homes for the real estate market for 7 years and I was part of the wedding industry {Read More}
