With fall and winter closing in, cold and flu season start to rear it’s ugly head….leaving you to have to stock up on expensive medicines to help combat the sickness. I have a few tried and true remedies that I use to help us stay up and running and out of the pharmacy.
THIS IS MY FOREWARNING BEFORE TRYING ANY HOME REMEDIES……DO SO ONLY ON THE ADVICE OF YOUR PHYSICIAN, AND CLEAR ALL HOME REMEDIES WITH YOUR MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL BEFORE USING!!! π
That being said, here is a cough syrup for adults that is the ONLY thing my husband can use at night to get rest and to stop his hacking…
Adults Only Cough Syrup
- 1 bag horehound candy (you can find this anywhere, it’s pretty easy to find)
- 1 Quart jar with lid
- Mr. Boston Vodka
Take the entire bag of candy and empty into the jar, adding vodka until it covers the candy by about an inch. Shake repeatedly for the next two weeks, until the candy completely dissolves. Take a spoonful before bed (I wouldn’t recommend using before driving) and enjoy a night of rest!!
CHAPPED LIP BALM
Take 1 part olive oil to 2 parts beeswax and heat until the beeswax melts. (NOTE about “parts”- it’s equal to anything, like teaspoons, tablespoons, cups- that way you can measure by how much you have on hand, not by a certain amount you would need to purchase) When this is melted completely, add about 3 drops Vitamin E oil and pour into a container to cool. Use as you would any chapstick.
I will share remedies next time that are suited for children, along with some other ideas for sanitizing your home to help ward off the ickies before they get started good π
